The Mercedes podium record that could be beaten by McLaren in 2025

McLaren are undeniably dominating the 2025 Formula 1 season, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris winning a combined 11 races out of the first 14.

There has been just one podium this year where a McLaren driver has not appeared, the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix. Piastri lost out to the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli for third place in the opening laps and was unable to recover the position.

On lap 67 of 70, disaster struck for Norris when an attempt to overtake his teammate, saw the Brit crash into the back of the car in front, taking himself out of the race.

McLaren’s impressive run has seen Piastri and Norris collect seven 1-2 finishes this season, quickly pulling them towards the all-time record. Although they currently sit in 8th place, the pair only need six more 1-2 finishes this year to take the achievement.

Iconic McLaren duo come third in most 1-2 finishes in a single F1 season

It may come as no surprise that Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost at McLaren in 1988 hold third place for the most 1-2 finishes in a season, with 10 during the full 16 race calendar.

The year was dominated by the pair, with Senna alone winning half of the races, and Prost taking a further seven.

Gerhard Berger was the only non-McLaren driver to win a race that year, taking the win for Ferrari in Monza, just weeks after the team’s founder Enzo Ferrari had died.

Unsurprisingly, Senna took the drivers’ championship title, with Prost finishing just three points behind his teammate.

The pair were known for their intense rivalry, which peaked during their two-year stint at McLaren as teammates. However, their dominance was unrivalled, taking a total of seven out of nine championship victories between 1985 and 1993.

Another of Formula 1’s more bitter rivalries takes both first and second place for most 1-2’s in a single season.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg dominated the 2014 and 2015 seasons, with the latter seeing just one additional 1-2 finish to take the top spot.

2014 saw Hamilton win 11 out of 19 races compared to Rosberg’s five. Similar to the 1988 season only one other driver managed to achieve a race win, with Daniel Ricciardo standing on the top spot of the podium for the remaining three races.

During the 2014 season, the pair took 11 1-2 finishes, with the most memorable taking place at the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix, just three races into the year.

The pair battled fiercely, with the leader switching hands between Hamilton and Rosberg multiple times throughout the race. With five laps to go, Rosberg made a late lunge into the first turn but after outbreaking himself, Hamilton was able to regain the position and take the race win.

The two Mercedes drivers also hold the record for the most 1-2 finishes in a single season, taking 12 between them in 2015.

Again, Hamilton took the most wins with 10 victories compared to Rosberg’s 6, with the bitter feud beginning to bubble away more intensely under the surface.

The title came down to a dramatic decider at the 2015 United States Grand Prix, which saw the tension come to a head in the cooldown room.

After taking his third drivers’ championship, Hamilton was seen throwing the second-place cap at his teammate, who then angrily threw it back at the Brit.
