Every driver wants to beat their teammate in Formula 1 as they are their first competitor on track and effectively the yardstick for comparison of how much they have improved.
Teammate battles can be a fairly one-sided affair, as they have been for Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez this season with the Mexican scoring only 20% of Red Bull’s total points this year.
Perez’s form caused Red Bull to miss out on the Constructors’ Championship this year, along with rival teams catching up including McLaren and Ferrari midway through the season.
McLaren emerged as the title contenders after the race in Imola, when Lando Norris piled pressure on Verstappen on merit. The Briton would later take his first victory convincingly at Miami in May, although it would take until the Dutch GP in September to come out on top again.
Part of Norris’ title challenge came from him consistently finishing on the podium, while also finishing ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri. The Australian could never hook it up in qualifying so often found himself having to work his way back into the top five, whereas Norris was always in the hunt for victories.
Although it felt like Piastri was closer to Norris, going through the average gaps throughout the season between each of the teammates in races tells an interesting story.

Logan Sargeant outpaced Sergio Perez and Oscar Piastri in teammate average lap time battle
Taking the fastest lap from each driver throughout the 24 races (provided via Formula1points.com), shows how each driver compares to their teammate in 2024.
Piastri was slower to Norris compared to Logan Sargeant’s average pace to Alex Albon. The same can be said for Perez and Verstappen, with the average gap being seven thousandths slower based on their quickest laps in each race.
| TEAM | DRIVER PAIRING | AVERAGE 2024 QUALIFYING GAP |
| Aston Martin | Alonso/Stroll | 0.520s |
| McLaren | Norris/Piastri | 0.447s |
| Williams | Albon/Colapinto | 0.445s |
| Red Bull | Verstappen/Perez | 0.377s |
| Williams | Albon/Sargeant | 0.303s |
| Sauber | Zhou/Bottas | 0.303s |
| RB | Tsunoda/Lawson | 0.260s |
| Alpine | Gasly/Ocon | 0.232s |
| Haas | Hulkenberg/Magnussen | 0.145s |
| Mercedes | Russell/Hamilton | 0.046s |
| RB | Tsunoda/Ricciardo | 0.037s |
| Ferrari | Leclerc/Sainz | 0.028s |
Sargeant was ousted from his Williams seat midway through the year in favour of Franco Colapinto, and while the Argentine made early headlines by finishing in the points, he appears to have finished behind Albon in the nine races he contested this season.
The largest gap by far is the deficit between Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, which currently sits at over half a second in the races. Stroll only finished in the top 10 places six times this year, scoring a total of 24 points which is his worst since 2022 (18 points).
Other surprises are how close Daniel Ricciardo was to Yuki Tsunoda despite getting axed after the Singapore GP in favour of Liam Lawson. Zhou Guanyu comfortably beat Valtteri Bottas at Sauber, with the Chinese driver also scoring their only points of the season.
Who needs to improve in F1 for 2025?
F1 is set to welcome four rookies to the grid next season with Oliver Bearman, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto and Jack Doohan making the step up to full-time drives.
While Hamilton managed to beat Russell on total points scored throughout their three years together, the latter came out on top in the average lap time battle.

Antonelli will have his work cut out trying to match Hamilton’s performance, while Bortoleto will also face a similar challenge against Hulkenberg who is renowned for being brilliant in qualifying.
The driver with the most improvement to do is Esteban Ocon, who will be up against Ferrari prospect Bearman at Haas. The Frenchman was two-tenths off Gasly throughout the season, although earned the team’s first podium of the season at Brazil with his second-place finish while his compatriot was third.
