Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has earned comparisons to Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher throughout his Formula 1 career.

Michael Schumacher won a world championship just three years after his F1 debut with Jordan, and while Max Verstappen had to wait slightly longer to win his first title, he’s quickly catching up to some of his most impressive records.

Both drivers made dramatic moves in the driver market early in their careers.

Benetton signed Schumacher after just one race, while Verstappen marked his debut as a Red Bull driver with victory at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.

The Dutchman had the opportunity to match Schumacher’s record of winning five consecutive titles last year, but missed out by two points to Lando Norris.

Ferrari’s greatest era in Formula 1 was thanks to Schumacher in the early 2000s, but an interview he gave before winning his first championship with the Scuderia has emerged, and he sounds exactly like Verstappen does now heading into the 2026 campaign.

Michael Schumacher never aimed to break Juan Manuel Fangio’s title record before winning seven championships

Schumacher was being interviewed at the 2000 Spanish Grand Prix when he was only a two-time world champion.

He already had a 20-point lead over Mika Hakkinen at this stage of the season, and was asked in an interview with Martin Brundle on ITV whether he was thinking about trying to match Juan Manuel Fangio’s record of five titles.

Schumacher explained: “This is not my goal.

“I mean, you see this goal to achieve the championship together with Ferrari, I think this is such a high target, such a high goal.

“I don’t need to look into the past and drivers whom I can’t compare myself to, which is different times.

“I’m a realistic man, and you can’t compare the 1950s against the 2000s; that’s impossible.”

In a recent interview with Blick, Verstappen was asked whether he saw any parallels between himself and the legendary German.

Verstappen explained: “Yes, on the track and in my private life.

“But after more than 230 races, my goal is definitely not to chase seven world championship titles.

“For me, there is nothing more important than my family and my children. They are the motivation that you can only get within your own four walls.”

It’s fascinating that Verstappen is going into the 2026 season with the same mindset that once made Schumacher the most successful F1 driver of all time.

Max Verstappen confirms Red Bull future plans with F1 records on the horizon

Although Verstappen needs at least three more seasons to match Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton’s record of seven F1 championships, he’s quickly approaching some of the German driver’s most impressive statistics.

The 28-year-old is approaching the top 10 most experienced drivers in F1 history, and could equal Daniel Ricciardo’s record of 257 starts in Abu Dhabi.

Verstappen needs 20 more wins to reach Schumacher’s tally of 91, and is the same number behind the Ferrari driver in terms of pole positions (48 to 68).

Verstappen has reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull, and that could play a crucial role in whether he catches Schumacher.

Nobody knows how Red Bull will shape up their rivals during the upcoming regulations changes.

If they have another season like 2023, then Verstappen will quickly match Schumacher’s achievements.
