Lewis Hamilton is entering a stage in the 2025 Formula 1 season where he will expect that a big result is going to come soon.
The Brit is waiting for a breakthrough with Ferrari, having struggled throughout much of his first nine races with them. It’s why he sits in sixth place in the drivers’ championship, 23 points either side of the positions above and below him.
In qualifying, Hamilton trails teammate Charles Leclerc by 7-2 in the head-to-head, while on a Sunday it’s 7-1 in favour of the Monegasque (both cars were disqualified in China). Their winter developments were a risk that hasn’t paid off, but they haven’t given up completely on the season and turned their attention to the 2026 F1 regulations just yet.
Team boss Fred Vasseur made an ‘extreme’ Hamilton claim, and the two have struggled to gel together so far. Before joining forces this year, it had been nearly 20 years since they had worked in tandem with ART in GP2 (now Formula 2) in 2006.
If the Scuderia want to get the very best out of the seven-time champion, then Hamilton needs Vasseur to emulate Toto Wolff and become better at energising and motivating his driver before he goes into battle. It’s something that the Mercedes boss has always been good at doing.

Lewis Hamilton will be interested by Fred Vasseur’s comments about Ferrari’s 2025 F1 car at Canada
Hamilton faces a ‘critical’ turning point at Ferrari and needs to find results soon, or he’s going to lose too much confidence ahead of next year’s new regulations. He needs to be ready to tackle a new rule set on the front foot, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case as he approaches the age of 40 this summer.
It now seems as if he has tried everything he can with himself and the car to make things click, but it just isn’t working. Hamilton made a ‘very uncomfortable’ change to his driving style, which clearly hasn’t worked and may have done more harm than good.
Ferraris were called ‘odd’ after the Spanish Grand Prix, when a Sauber overtook them on merit at the end of the race. Nico Hulkenberg eased past Hamilton without a defence, which shows just how dire the situation is becoming for them.
“Tell me! You say we never comment on it. But of course, we will continue to accelerate the development of the car,” he said, according to SPEEDWEEK.
“Sometimes the changes are visible, sometimes not. Sometimes we have to disclose them to the FIA, sometimes we don’t.”

Why the upcoming F1 races should be good for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari
Over the next few races, Ferrari have the opportunity to race at some tracks which should suit the characteristics of their car a little bit more.
Starting with Canada, before moving on to Austria and Britain, they’re going to need to trim their wings for these races and focus on top speed.
Looking back at China, where they were at their strongest this season, it was a similar situation and they even managed to win the sprint there. It was Hamilton’s only notable success so far.
Ferrari are rushing their Canadian Grand Prix upgrades in a bid to catch their rivals. They remain optimistic that they can catch McLaren on performance at some point this year.
