James Vowles has already broken one promise to Williams’ F1 fans as Barcelona absence confirmed

Williams announced that they wouldn’t be present for F1’s first week of testing at the Barcelona shakedown next week, which is the complete opposite of what James Vowles has previously said.

When the Formula 1 grid congregates for the first few days of pre-season testing in Barcelona next week, Williams will be the only team who aren’t present after it emerged that they failed the FIA’s crucial crash-test.

It had previously been suggested that the Grove-based outfit may be cutting it fine ahead of the scheduled week of running, but the announcement still serves as quite the shock, considering they were one of the first teams on the grid to switch focus entirely on the new ruleset.

Cadillac became the first team to pass the FIA’s rigorous scrutineering checks following rumours that they may be strapped for time to complete the certification. Instead, the red faces fall to Williams.

What impact will Williams missing the Barcelona shakedown test have on their 2026 season?

James Vowles has broken his promise to Williams’ F1 fans that there would be ‘no delays’ in 2026

During an interview following the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, Williams team principal James Vowles assured fans that they would experience ‘no delays’ with getting their challenger on the circuit ahead of the upcoming season.

The claim was made after Vowles revealed that engineers have had to ‘sacrifice’ some early performance in order to get the car ready in time.

However, the British executive’s quotes now serve as a double blow for those loyal to the Grove-based outfit.

Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz will now only be allotted three days of testing each in the brand-new car, which is a big disadvantage when considering that the new ruleset is one of the biggest regulatory overhauls in the sport’s history.

Williams infamously missed the opening few days of testing in 2019 and suffered terribly during that year’s campaign as a result.

It marked one of the British constructor’s worst-ever seasons in the pinnacle of single-seater motorsport, as they amassed just a solitary point over the course of the 21-race schedule.

The trajectory that Williams have been on should mean 2026 won’t be a repeat of 2019

Despite the stark similarities that the start of the 2026 F1 season has with their disastrous 2019 campaign, Williams should hopefully be in a much better place to remain competitive this year.

Vowles has turned the F1 team around since his appointment to the role of team principal in 2023, with the most recent campaign marking their most successful season in F1 in a decade.

What’s more, Helmut Marko was very complimentary of Williams’ progress during his final year with Red Bull.

The former special advisor to the Austrian constructor detailed how the Grove-based racing team have made ‘considerable progress’, and tipped them to continue it into the upcoming campaign.

However, nothing will be known until Williams’ 2026 challenger hits the circuit and clocks in some laps. With their absence now confirmed, the earliest that we will be able to see it in action will be in the first week of F1’s official pre-season testing sessions between the 11th and 13th of February.
