Charles Leclerc will end his seventh season at Ferrari without a world title. Lewis Hamilton has already won seven, but looks further from an eighth than ever.
Leclerc will make his 150th race start for Ferrari at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Only Michael Schumacher (180) and Kimi Raikkonen (151) have made more appearances for the Scuderia.
Raikkonen, still Ferrari’s last drivers’ champion, lifted the trophy in his debut season in 2007. Schumacher had to wait until his fifth year, but then proceeded to win five in a row; Leclerc has had to be content with one runner-up finish in 2022.
He may be the most successful driver in F1 history, but there’s growing evidence that Hamilton is in decline. At the start of the year, fans voted Ferrari’s line-up the strongest in F1, but now the narrative has changed.
Most F1 fans think Ferrari won’t win with Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc
F1Oversteer has been running a Talking Points poll about Ferrari’s F1 drivers. We asked whether the Scuderia will ever win a championship with Leclerc or Hamilton.
There have been more than 2,300 votes to date, with 64.6% of fans saying ‘no’. The remaining 35.4% still have faith.
Fernando Alonso’s warning to Ferrari in 2014
John Elkann hinted that Ferrari’s drivers are the problem when he told them to ‘talk less’ after the Brazilian GP. He praised the performance of the team’s mechanics and engineers.
But the voting results could also indicate that fans have lost confidence in the Ferrari operation. Even with a star-studded driver duo, the team may not have the structure or culture required to win.
David Croft is worried about Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari feedback documents
Hamilton ‘refuses’ to fail at Ferrari like Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, two ‘amazing’ drivers who twice finished as the runner-up.
According to former Mercedes engineer Aldo Costa, Hamilton wants to be the ‘hero’ at Ferrari. There’s no better way to attain that status than to end the team’s drought.
To that end, Hamilton has been sending the team documents of feedback, telling them what they need to change to become winners. David Croft fears this wasn’t well-received.
The Prancing Horse are said to be ‘set in their ways’, perhaps more so than any other team.
