F1 fans left seriously excited as ‘awesome’ circuit bids to return to the calendar in 2027

Even with the F1 calendar now featuring a staggering 24 different and unique circuits, there are a multitude of fan-favourite tracks that don’t have a permanent spot on the schedule.

Imola is the latest circuit to be given the boot, with the new Madrid street circuit taking its spot on the Formula 1 calendar from next season.

Despite its legendary status as the jewel in F1’s crown, fans wouldn’t mind seeing the back of Monaco either, with many believing they can live without seeing the 20-car grid take part in a traffic jam for the best part of two hours.

In the unlikely event that the Monegasque circuit was shown the door, it could open up an opportunity for a dedicated circuit to join the calendar, and F1 fans have had their say on which one they would love to see back in the schedule.

Fans would love for Portimao to return to the F1 calendar soon

Taking to the social media platform Reddit to discuss the possibility of a return to the Algarve, fans couldn’t be more excited.

One user wrote, “I am very happy if this is true. Portimao is a fantastic, undulating track and has good overtaking opportunities into turn five.” Another user highlighted the recent addition of multiple street circuits, commenting, “First addition of a proper circuit in a while, and a good one at that.”

Another Redditor expressed their admiration for the track, writing, “Yessss, Portimao is one of my faves.”

Whilst someone else shared the previous sentiment of the unique layout of the circuit, posting, “Portimao is an awesome circuit with an absolute bonkers [level] of elevation changes.”

Fans also expressed their desire for the circuit’s return on X (formerly Twitter), with one user also noting another track from the COVID-19 era in Mugello, writing, “I would like to see Portimao and Mugello back, Portimao being the best track, both with long straights to overtake.”

Another X user shared a similar opinion, commenting, “The only right answer is Mugello and Portimao!” Finally, one user stated how desperate they are for Portimao to be added as a staple to the calendar, declaring, “Portimao. I’d literally do anything I could for Portimao.”

The Portuguese government are ‘prepared to formalise’ F1’s return to Portimao in 2027

The desire for the Portuguese circuit’s return to the calendar came after reports of the Iberian country’s desire to get itself back on the 24-race schedule as a permanent stop.

They may have some competition, as organisers of the Turkish Grand Prix are also keen for Istanbul Park to be added back to the F1 calendar as well.

At a reception which took place in the middle of August, the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, stated, via Auto Motor und Sport, that they have been working to have ‘everything prepared to formalise the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve in 2027.’

The last time the F1 circus stopped off at Portimao was in 2021, in a two-year stint that helped the sport give fans a proper championship during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lewis Hamilton won both events during his pursuit of a seventh and eighth world title, respectively.
