F1 fans can’t believe what Lewis Hamilton was told by Ferrari in unheard radio message at the Hungarian Grand Prix

For the first time this season, Lewis Hamilton walks away from a Formula 1 race weekend without scoring a point.

Heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix, there were positives for Lewis Hamilton to take from his visit to Spa.

Hamilton produced a tactical masterclass at the Belgian Grand Prix, making up 11 positions after two difficult qualifying sessions.

Ferrari delivered a rear suspension update last weekend, and it appeared to make an immediate impact on Charles Leclerc’s performances after he secured the 27th pole position of his career at the Hungaroring.

Leclerc ultimately fell short of the podium on Sunday, complaining about his car’s performance during the closing laps.

He couldn’t do anything to stop McLaren driver Oscar Piastri overtaking him, and picked up a five-second time penalty for his overly aggressive defending when trying to stop George Russell from coming past him.

However, on the other side of the garage, Hamilton would have done anything to be fighting for a podium.

Hamilton said after qualifying that Ferrari should consider replacing him, but fans were left incensed by a radio message he received as soon as the race started that ultimately limited the result he could achieve.

Fans furious as Lewis Hamilton told to lift and coast in unheard Hungarian Grand Prix radio message

Hamilton was the only driver to start on the hard tyres, which turned out to be a tactical misstep from Ferrari.

The 40-year-old was stuck in a long DRS train with Fernando Alonso at the front, and that meant many of the drivers were able to extend their stints on softer tyres, negating any potential advantage Hamilton was creating.

By the time he changed onto the medium tyres, he was able to make progress, but a points finish was out of the equation.

At the beginning of the race, Hamilton’s race engineer Riccardo Adami asked him: “Increase the lift and coast for turn one and turn two.”

A frustrated Hamilton replied: “I’m already lifting and coasting a huge amount,” to which Adami said: “Understood.”

Plenty of fans responded to these comments and weren’t happy with the instructions that Hamilton keeps being asked to follow by Ferrari.

“Always us,” replied one Hamilton fan, while another said: “They need to fix these brakes.”

One comment read: “How do we already have a lift and coast and we’re not even halfway?”

“He has to be using the older brakes again, only explanation,” questioned one fan, while another noted: “DRS train from P6 to P18, no chance to overtake at all.”

“Why only Lewis, though? It’s always him,” said an upset Hamilton fan, and another comment said: “Why Ricky? Sort out this mess.”

Lewis Hamilton’s biggest ‘problem’ identified at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Hamilton was despondent after the race, even though his pace should have been good enough to score points had he not started on the hard tyres.

Sam Bird spotted Hamilton’s biggest ‘problem’ during the race, but it could have been avoided had he started on the same strategy as the cars around him.

Leclerc was also annoyed that he couldn’t hold onto a podium, and it highlights that Ferrari’s new update package hasn’t solved all of their issues.

The summer break includes a mandatory shutdown during which all teams can’t work on their cars.

That will only leave Ferrari more frustrated, as they appear to be on the cusp of a breakthrough, but they’re running out of time for it to have any effect, with a new set of regulations being introduced next year.
