F1 fans can’t believe what ‘beast’ Fernando Alonso just did at Imola that went almost unnoticed on TV

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso will be wondering what he needs to do this season to score his first world championship point.

After seven rounds, Aston Martin currently sit seventh in the constructors’ championship.

However, each of those points comes courtesy of Lance Stroll after finishing in the top 10 in Australia and China (via three disqualifications) and securing a P5 in the Sprint Race in Miami.

It’s no coincidence that Stroll has capitalised on three of the most chaotic races of the season to break into the points, but Fernando Alonso will be frustrated that he hasn’t been able to match his less experienced teammate.

Statistically, Alonso has been by far the better qualifier out of the two Aston Martin teammates, but luck hasn’t been on his side which was the case again on Sunday at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Jacques Villeneuve was impressed with Aston Martin for using the medium tyres during qualifying, helping them deliver their best performance of the season which coincided with the manufacturer bringing their first major update package of the year.

Ted Kravitz suggested Adrian Newey may have even had conversations about Aston Martin’s current car, but all the hard work they did at the beginning of the weekend unravelled on Sunday.

Fernando Alonso’s brilliant overtakes at the end of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

Alonso got off to a good start, but both he and Stroll pitted earlier in the race when it appeared as though the medium tyres were going off.

Unfortunately, the compound got a second wind, and the unfortunate timing of first the virtual safety car when Esteban Ocon stopped and then the full safety car when Kimi Antonelli retired worked against them.

Stroll also suffered a slow pit stop, but when the race restarted for the final time, Alonso pulled off three brilliant overtakes to finish P11 and narrowly missed out on his first point.

His fans were staggered by his lack of luck, with one commenting, “He may not have scored but these three overtakes are only done by him. They talk about the cliff and so on, but Fernando Alonso [can keep going for] a while.”

Another fan said, “He had the tyre advantage, but he was in a DRS train. And in a DRS train, from the Safety Car to the end of the race, no one was able to overtake. Except him. The one who always tries something different. There’s never any luck. But there’s always him.”

One statement read, “Two weeks ago they messed up the Miami Sprint… now this…” while another fan added, “But you see how that tractor runs, my goodness!”

Alonso’s contract runs until the end of 2026, but one fan suggested, “If, according to him, he’s not going to retire until he’s seen to be slower than the youngsters, this guy has three or four pretty easy years left. What a beast he is, always going against the grain and a beast in every sense.”

It wasn’t all positive though, with one person commenting, “Excuses and more excuses and more excuses, and such. Twenty years of the same thing.”

Another person agreed and said, “Leave the fanaticism, he has not scored any points in the championship and even more so today when he finished fifth.”

Fernando Alonso claims ‘you can’t beat luck’ after finishing 11th at Imola

Although some of Alonso’s late overtakes were seen on TV, the commentary team didn’t give him as much credit as many people feel he deserved.

It didn’t help that there was a battle for the final two podium positions and Lewis Hamilton’s best finish for Ferrari going on, but posting on Instagram after the race, the Spaniard said, “You can’t beat luck, but it was a solid weekend with strong laps in qualy and strong pace in the race.

“There wasn’t much more we could do. Good points for the team were on the way until the VSC.

“The car has made a step forward and hopefully we can maintain it in the upcoming races.

“Next 2 weekends we go racing again. Vamosss.”
