F1 fans can barely contain their laughter after hearing what Oscar Piastri just said about Alpine exit, ‘made my day’

Oscar Piastri pulled off a masterstroke before his F1 career had even started by leaving Alpine. He’s gone on to enjoy huge success at McLaren.

Piastri scored two podiums in his rookie season and became a race-winner midway through his sophomore year. His third campaign could see him become a world champion.

At the 25% mark, the Australian leads McLaren teammate Lando Norris by 16 points. He’s won four out of six races, notched his first two poles and increased his career podium tally to 14.

Meanwhile, Alpine have hovered rather anonymously in the midfield. After back-to-back P6 finishes in the constructors’, they’re currently down in ninth with only seven points to their name.

Alpine announced that Piastri would drive for them in 2023 when Fernando Alonso left to join Aston Martin. However, he’d already decided to leave and join McLaren at that point.

The papaya team won the ensuing legal battle to secure the former F2 and F3 champion. Zak Brown accused Alpine of trying to ‘bully’ Piastri by releasing their statement.

Oscar Piastri had to ‘tip-toe’ around Alpine exit in F1 interview

To commemorate the sport’s 75th anniversary, the official YouTube channel released a video called ‘The Day I Made it to F1’. They spoke to all 20 drivers about their passage to the pinnacle of racing.

Piastri acknowledged that his situation was unique, and somewhat awkward to discuss. It was one of the most extraordinary driver market moments in the sport’s recent history.

Asked when he knew he’d be an F1 driver, he said: “Well… it seems like an easy question to answer. It’s not that easy to answer for me!”

He later added: “[I had to wait] about a month [before I could tell people], then it was pretty public at that point.”

In the comments, many F1 fans struggled to hold in their laughter. One called Piastri ‘effortlessly hilarious’, while another said his ‘answers are killing me’.

“Oscar trying desperately not to mention Alpine has made my day,” a separate response read.

“It’s so funny Oscar and Esteban [Ocon] trying to avoid naming Alpine at all costs,” a fellow viewer agreed.

Other comments included ‘Piastri tip-toeing around that massive elephant is hilarious’ and ‘Oscar is really bringing that dry Aussie humour to the grid, you love to see it’.

Oscar Piastri has learned when McLaren could introduce team orders in 2025

With the MCL39 dominant, Piastri’s biggest challenger for the title is likely to be Norris, although Max Verstappen can never be counted out.

Should Verstappen, who’s currently 32 points behind, remain close, McLaren could introduce team orders to favour their lead driver. But Brown says this is unlikely to happen until the last quarter of the season.

The Woking outfit faced criticism last year for delaying the introduction of a driver hierarchy. Piastri had to help out Norris on multiple occasions as he tried in vain to catch Verstappen.

Zak Brown says McLaren won’t be divided like Mercedes were during the Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg days. He believes the culture he’s instilled precludes those ‘tears’, but that will inevitably be put to the test.
