Michael Schumacher will forever stand as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers in the history of the sport.

Making his debut with Jordan in 1991, the German went on to win seven drivers’ championships with Benetton and Ferrari, before briefly walking away from F1 at the end of 2006.

Schumacher’s return with Mercedes from 2010 to 2012 did not go to plan as he struggled for consistent results. Nevertheless, with 91 wins and 155 podiums, 68 pole positions and 77 fastest laps, he is absolutely in the debate for F1’s ‘GOAT’.

Schumacher stood as F1’s most successful driver of all time after his retirement in 2012. It remained the case until 2020, when Lewis Hamilton usurped him as the winningest F1 driver – a record he still holds today – and equalled his seven world championships.

But despite leaving F1 nearly 14 years ago, Schumacher is the holder of several records, and some may not be beaten any time soon.

The records Michael Schumacher still holds in Formula 1 in 2026

Of course, Schumacher still has the record for the most world championships alongside Hamilton with seven, but that is not the only accolade they share.

The pair have set the record for the most consecutive seasons with a win, standing at 15. Schumacher achieved the feat from 1992 to 2006, while Hamilton won a race in his first 15 seasons from 2007.

But there are multiple records where Schumacher stands alone. Lando Norris’ 2025 title win ensured that he remains the only driver to win five consecutive championships, denying Max Verstappen from equalling the feat.

The German has the most fastest laps (77) and the most race wins not from pole position (51). Furthermore, Schumacher has the most hat-tricks (pole position, fastest lap and the win) in history at 22.

His 2002 title-winning season with Ferrari stands out as arguably his best, finishing on the podium at every race, the only driver to ever do so. That year, he also achieved the most consecutive top-two finishes with 15.

Michael Schumacher knew the driver he wanted to break his title record

Up until Hamilton’s incredible spell at Mercedes, Schumacher looked invincible when it came to his accolades. No driver has really come close to matching them.

Schumacher would have been ‘happy’ to see Sebastian Vettel beat his title record, expressing admiration for his talent. The Red Bull star won four titles between 2010 and 2013, but could not add any more to his name after the turn of the turbo-hybrid era.

Hamilton dominated with the new engines, winning six titles in seven seasons before Verstappen put a stop to his reign in 2021.

The Dutchman went on to win four consecutive titles and narrowly missed out on a fifth to Norris in 2025. Whether the Red Bull star will achieve seven championships is another question, but it is not Verstappen’s aim to match Schumacher anyway.
