David Coulthard might not be the most successful Red Bull Racing driver in the team’s history, but he’s one of the most important.

Red Bull made their Formula 1 debut in 2005, with David Coulthard and Christian Klien their chosen drivers.

Klien shared his seat with Vitantonio Luizzi, while the experienced Scot nailed down a seat on the other side of the garage for four seasons.

Coulthard arrived at Red Bull with plenty of experience, having battled the likes of Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen for the drivers’ championship.

To this day, only Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel have won more Grand Prix and raced for Red Bull in Formula 1 compared to Coulthard.

One of Coulthard’s greatest ever Red Bull drivers was Mark Webber, who was his final F1 teammate before he retired.

The two raced alongside each other in 2007 and 2008, and while they helped carry Red Bull forward, there was one moment where Coulthard left Webber and team principal Christian Horner absolutely furious.

David Coulthard recalls ‘argument’ with Christian Horner and Mark Webber at Red Bull

Coulthard was speaking on the Asa Park Podcast and recalled an incident at the 2007 Chinese Grand Prix.

He explained: “I had fallouts with my teammates and I had a fall out with Damon, I had a fall out with Mika, fell out with Kimi, fell out with Mark Webber.

“Mark and I were in China, and we were out of sequence on our pit stops.

“I had a chance to try and get a point by overtaking Heikki Kovalainen in the McLaren.

“And Mark wanted me to move out of the way to let him pass to try and have a go. I didn’t need to. I didn’t want to.

“I eventually overtook Heikki and finished in the points, and Mark stayed behind Heikki.

“But of course, after the race, there was an argument with Christian Horner and Mark and me, but then you move on.

“So I don’t have an issue with saying what you have to say. And then, you know, what do you want to do? Do you want to hold a grudge, or do you want to get on with being professional?”

David Coulthard’s Red Bull prediction came true after his Formula 1 retirement

Coulthard would have known his time in Formula 1 was coming to an end while he was teammates with Webber.

During their two seasons together, Webber outqualified the Scot 30 times, with Coulthard only getting the better of him on five occasions.

The Australian finished ahead of his teammate on 22 occasions, and while Coulthard made up more ground on Sundays, beating Webber 11 times, it was hard for Horner to overlook Vettel when the 2009 season rolled around after his miraculous victory at Monza the previous year.

Coulthard predicted Red Bull would win championships at the start of the team’s existence on the grid.

While he wasn’t present when that eventually happened, he could see the work Horner and Webber were doing behind the scenes during his final years with the team.
