Pierre Gasly has now reached over 150 starts during his Formula 1 career, so with that F1 Oversteer is taking a look at some of his best moments including his first podium and win.

The Frenchman was brought into Formula 1 following a successful career in junior formula backed by Red Bull, making his single-seater debut in French F4 and later Formula Renault.

After winning the Formula Renault 2.0 title in 2013, he made the switch to Formula Renault 3.5 in which he was up against fellow Red Bull junior and later F1 rival Carlos Sainz. Gasly would go on to lose the title but was later promoted to GP2 (now F2), which he won in 2016, and was eventually given a seat at Toro Rosso in 2017.

Gasly would spend the next two seasons at Toro Rosso before a disastrous move to Red Bull, in which he only lasted 12 races up against Max Verstappen before being replaced by Alex Albon. After another two years with Toro Rosso, he made the switch to French outfit Alpine in 2023 and will now enter his third year in a row with the team.

Where did Pierre Gasly make his Formula 1 debut?

Gasly made his Formula 1 debut at the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix replacing Daniil Kvyat, who had been ousted following a spate of poor results.

In qualifying Gasly was just a tenth off Sainz who had been in the car all season, starting the race from P15 on the grid. He would later go on to finish in P14 in the race, beating Sainz who retired 29 laps into the race with an engine issue.

Where did Pierre Gasly take his first podium finish in Formula 1?

Gasly’s first podium in F1 came at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, after an unlikely turn of events promoted him into the top three positions.

After both Ferrari drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, collided while racing for position it brought out a late Safety Car in the race. Several drivers pitted but Gasly stayed out and found himself in second, but was quickly overtaken by Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton was then duelling with Alex Albon but the pair made contact, sending Albon out of contention for a podium and slowing Hamilton. This enabled Gasly to cut through into second, with the Frenchman beating Hamilton to the line by 0.062s.

With a victory for Verstappen in the Red Bull, the race made history by being the first time since 1991 that drivers using Honda-powered cars finished 1-2.

Pierre Gasly won his first Formula 1 race at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix

Gasly would go on to win his first race at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, emulating the feat achieved by Sebastian Vettel in the same team in 2008.

Race leader Hamilton was expected to win, but a 10-second stop/go penalty for entering the pit lane for pitting when it was closed put that in jeopardy. The race had several Safety Cars, notably for Charles Leclerc who crashed heavily at Parabolica.

Gasly, who started from P10, had worked his way up through the field and found himself in second place after a moment from Lance Stroll in the Racing Point. With Hamilton serving his penalty, Gasly was promoted to the lead from Kimi Raikkonen and Carlos Sainz.

He eventually went on to win the race and take AlphaTauri’s first and only victory in F1, ahead of Sainz and Stroll. It was an emotional moment for the Frenchman, who used the result as vindication to show that he has what it takes to race for a top team after getting dropped by Red Bull in the previous year.

Pierre Gasly has enjoyed some great moments in Formula 1

One of Gasly’s best races came early on in his F1 career when he bagged a top-four finish for Toro Rosso at the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Gasly had shown promise towards the end of 2017 and after a dramatic few laps in Bahrain, the Frenchman managed to avoid all the carnage. Having moved up the order, he battled with Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg before eventually finishing in P4.

The 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was another impressive race for Gasly in inferior machinery when he finished in third place for AlphaTauri.

Gasly would go on to achieve two more podiums in F1 with Alpine at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, keeping his car on track amid the sodden track and often sudden rain, and at the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix which helped secure sixth in the Constructors’ Championship for his team.
