Frederik Vesti is the official reserve driver for Mercedes having been part of their young driver programme since 2021.

Having started go-karting competitively at the age of 10 years old, Vesti won the Rotax and Cadet championships in his home country of Denmark.

He made the switch to junior formulas in 2016 where he competed in the Danish Formula Ford championship, and finished fourth.

For the 2017 and 2018 seasons, he would compete in the German F4 championship where he won a total of three races and finished in a highest position of fourth in the championship in his second year.

Vesti’s breakthrough season came in 2019 when he won the Formula Regional European title, having achieved 20 podiums in 24 races and 13 victories.

All of this gained him the support of Mercedes, who recruited him to their young driver programme ahead of the 2021 having finished his rookie season in Formula 3 in fourth. He switched teams from Prema to ART in F3 for that season and finished fourth in the championship after four podiums.

Vesti made the switch to Formula 2 for the 2022 season where he immediately made an impression with a victory in Baku, then later achieved podiums at Paul Ricard, Monza and Barcelona.

He would go on to compete for the title in 2023 along with Sauber junior driver Theo Pourchaire, ultimately coming out as runner-up by just nine points.

With no sign of an F1 promotion after F2, Vesti would go on to compete in sportscars having taken part in the European Le Mans Series in 2024 and later IMSA for the 2025 season.

Having also been Mercedes official reserve driver, Vesti admitted that he learned a lot from Lewis Hamilton while being present with them on race weekend.

Vesti has already made two appearances in FP1 sessions with Mercedes, having previously driven for the Silver Arrows at Mexico and Abu Dhabi in 2023, and made a fourth in 2025 at Bahrain.
