Paul Aron is one of the most exciting rookie prospects who was recently signed to Alpine’s reserve driver pool, so here is all you need to know about him.
Aron joined Alpine’s reserve driver roster in December 2024, following an impressive rookie season in Formula 2 in which he finished third in the championship.
The 21-year-old made his debut for the team at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, after previously taking part in two rookie sessions with Sauber earlier in the year. Aron replaced Franco Colapinto for the session and has said he’s “aiming to do as good a job as possible to help set up the car for the whole weekend.”
Having previously been part of Mercedes’ junior team, he left the programme in November 2023. He would later go on to make his debut in F1 machinery with Alpine at the 2024 post-season test in Abu Dhabi, where he drove a total of 121 laps and set the ninth quickest time overall.
He would later sign to be part of Alpine’s reserve pool of drivers in November 2024, joining the team the following month. While he is not the team’s first choice, after Jack Doohan was replaced by Franco Colapinto, he will still be on hand to drive their simulator in 2025.
Alpine agreed a deal with Sauber in June, which confirmed that Aron would take part in two rookie practice sessions with the Swiss racing team in 2025.

Paul Aron impressed Mercedes early in his junior formula career
Aron started his racing career at the age of seven, participating in karting events in his home country of Estonia before competing in championships across Europe.
In 2018, he won the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship, which caught the eye of the Mercedes F1 team, who signed him as part of their junior squad in July 2019. Three months later he would make his debut in junior single seaters.
Aron would compete in a variety of series across 2019 and 2022 including finishing third in Italian F4 and the Formula Regional European Championship, where he finished third overall twice.
Paul Aron finishes strongly in Formula 1 supports
He made his debut in Formula 3 for the 2023 season with Prema, winning his first race at the Austrian Sprint race. Aron climbed up the order from eighth place to second in the first eight laps, then a Safety Car restart enabled him to claim first and win the race.
Aron’s consistency throughout the season enabled him to place third overall in the standings, with one victory, four podiums, and two fastest laps.
After making the step up to Formula 2 at the end of 2023, Aron would go on to complete a full season in 2024 with Hitech as an independent driver. His consistency showed yet again, scoring seven podiums in the first seven rounds and claiming a victory at the Qatar round later in the season.
With eight podiums and four poles along with the victory, he went on to finish in third place overall in the championship.

Paul Aron joins Alpine as reserve driver
Aron was announced as a test and reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team at the end of 2024 and drove the A524 in the post-season test in Abu Dhabi.
As part of a deal with Sauber, Alpine have loaned Aron to the team to take part in two of their four mandatory FP1 rookie sessions, replacing Nico Hulkenberg at both the British and Hungarian races.
Aron finished 17th in his first session with Sauber at Silverstone, with a lap time of 1:28:142 on the soft tyre.
Aron could potentially make his F1 debut later in the season, depending on whether the team decides to proceed with Colapinto.
