Alex Dunne is one of the Alpine Academy drivers and became the first driver since Ralf Firman to compete under an Irish licence since 2003.
Although Firman was not strictly from Ireland, his superlicence was issued by the Automobile Club in the Republic of Ireland. Dunne himself is a native of the Republic of Ireland, and is the first driver from the country since Tommy Byrne in 1982.
The teenager took part in his second FP1 session with McLaren at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The academy driver displayed an impressive performance during the FP1 session at the Austrian Grand Prix, finishing fourth in the timings.
Ahead of the weekend, Dunne said he was: “looking forward to building and improving on what was already a strong outing in Austria”, adding that the session in Monza “is definitely going to put a very big smile on my face.”
Dunne began karting at the age of eight, taking multiple victories in local competitions, before going on to participate in European championships.
A switch to cars in 2021 saw him make his single seater debut in the Spanish Formula 4 championship, finishing third in his first race, having started from pole. He finished the season eighth in the standings, beating a lot of regular competitors.
Dunne would go on to race in the British F4 championship the following season, which he won while also dovetailing it with a campaign in the UAE F4 and Italian F4 championships.
In Italian F4, he would go up against Andrea Kimi Antonelli, ending the year second in the standings after the current Mercedes driver built up an unobtainable lead in the final rounds.

Alex Dunne made the switch to F1 support categories in 2024
After progressing through to GB3 and finishing runner-up in the championship with 466 points with five wins, Dunne would make the step up to the F1 support categories F3 and F2.
Dunne’s F3 season would prove to be challenging, with the Irish driver struggling to finish inside the points for most of the season.
A breakthrough result in the Spain round would see Dunne finish second in the Sprint race, with him following up with three points finishes between the Feature race and the Austrian weekend.
Dunne’s next podium would come at Monza, where he finished third, before rounding off the season with a fourth place and finishing 14th overall in the championship.
A switch to F2 in 2025 would prove to be more successful, with Dunne currently competing with Rodin Motorsport. After winning in Bahrain, he would win again at Imola and take podiums in Jeddah and Spain.
Alongside his commitments in F2 feeder series, Dunne also joined the Alpine academy at the start of 2026 after parting ways with McLaren at the end of the last season.
