David Coulthard admits he loves 26-year-old driver who needs to be more consistent

David Coulthard is a big fan of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc but thinks both and the team need to find more consistency.

Charles Leclerc has committed his future to the Italian team this winter and will be hoping to end his wait for a race win after failing to come close last season.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, David Coulthard was raving about the 26-year-old driver.

The start of the season is now just a few weeks away and teams will be starting to reveal their latest cars very soon.

There will be plenty of excitement and Ferrari and McLaren after they tie down their star drivers to new deals.

Lando Norris will spend the next few seasons with the Woking-based team, and Oscar Piastri is committed to at least three more years with the team.

His announcement came a few days after Ferrari shared that Leclerc will be with the team for the foreseeable future.

Coulthard admitted he’s a huge fan of Leclerc but wants him to improve his consistency.

He pointed at his brilliant pole position record but his inability to convert those front-row starts into wins.

The Monegasque driver would love to improve that record, but Max Verstappen and Red Bull made that virtually impossible last year.

Speaking about the 26-year-old, Coulthard said: “In terms of other big news this month, Charles Leclerc has extended on a multi-year basis his contract at Ferrari.

“Now, he’s a young man, a very nice young man as you know. Statistics 23 pole positions from 125 Grand Prix, 30 podiums, but rather worryingly he’s only had five wins.

“So, I’m a believer and I think that he just needs a bit of consistency of performance from the Ferrari car to give him the results and the confidence that will come from that.

“But it is interesting that Ferrari are very much committed to him, believe in him as their potential future world champion.”

Leclerc’s consistency is a slight issue but as Coulthard says Ferrari also need to play their part.

Carlos Sainz proved in Singapore that the car was capable of winning in 2023 under the right conditions.

However, on traditional circuits, Red Bull were streets ahead of their rivals.

It will be fascinating when testing starts at the end of the month where Ferrari stand compared to their rivals.
