The chances of Lewis Hamilton ever driving for Ferrari in the future appear to have faded after Charles Leclerc signed his new contract.
Lewis Hamilton has been linked with a move to Ferrari throughout his career, with the latest rumours cropping up last year before he signed an extension with Mercedes.
Speaking on the Unlapped Podcast, journalist Lawrence Edmondson has shared how he believes Hamilton will see out his days in Formula 1.
Although they’ve not won a title since 2008, Ferrari are still Formula 1’s most iconic team.
The sight of their famous red car on the grid is synonymous with the sport and even someone who knows nothing about F1 would recognise a Ferrari.
So many drivers dream of representing the team with Alex Albon opening admitting he’s a huge fan.
Lewis Hamilton has spent two decades in F1 but has only ever driven for McLaren and Mercedes.
The sight of Hamilton in a Ferrari would look very strange as a result and unfortunately doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in the future, but there might always be a case of what if for the British driver having never joined them.
He’s just turned 39 and while Fernando Alonso is still going strong at 42, the Brit is running out of chances to join the team.
They’ve already secured the long-term future of Charles Leclerc, while Hamilton is going to be with Mercedes for at least the next two seasons.

Hamilton very unlikely to drive for Ferrari in the future
Speaking about the seven-time world champion, Edmondson said: “We know that Hamilton has a contract through to 2025, I think it’s very unlikely now that he would end his career at Ferrari.
“Max Verstappen has a contract through to 2028, given the availability of drivers that Ferrari was looking at, I think getting Leclerc in one of those seats on what we think is a long-term deal makes a huge amount of sense.”
The ‘courageous’ driver has enjoyed an unbelievable career in Formula 1 and is unlikely to regret any of the decisions he’s made that have led him to where he is today.
Ferrari haven’t produced a car that can challenge for the championship since Hamilton’s move to Mercedes and there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to do so in the future.
Leclerc will be hoping for changes when the new regulations are introduced in 2026.
Hamilton might have one eye on switching teams then if he’s not happy with the direction Mercedes are going in.
But if Carlos Sainz signs a new deal, or if he’s replaced for 2025, whichever driver is alongside Leclerc will want assurances of their long-term future too.
That surely rules out one of Formula 1’s most iconic drivers joining the sport’s most recognisable team.
