Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher has admitted that he’s hoping to keep his dream of racing in Formula 1 again alive this season.
After two seasons with Haas, Mick Schumacher lost his place on the grid ahead of the 2023 season and was replaced by Nico Hulkenberg.
Speaking on The Fast & The Curious Podcast, the 24-year-old said he may have taken his time in F1 for granted once he earned his seat.
Mick Schumacher admits Formula 1 dream is still alive
The expectation on Mick Schumacher’s shoulders when his racing career started to take off was extraordinary.
As the son of arguably the greatest racing driver in Formula 1 history, it felt like it was only a matter of time until he would earn his spot on the grid.
A sensational second half to the 2020 Formula 2 championship saw him win the title alongside his duties as Haas and Alfa Romeo test driver.
He was on the grid in 2021 with Guenther Steiner’s team alongside fellow rookie Nikita Mazepin but had to wait until the following year to score his first point.
Mick Schumacher’s Formula 1 dream looked like it was coming to an end after just 44 Grand Prix when he was replaced at the end of 2022.

However, he was picked up by Mercedes as their reserve driver and with Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari next year, a spot may just open up for him.
His uncle Ralf Schumacher has backed him to have a chance of replacing the seven-time world champion.
He’ll face plenty of competition for that role and will know his performances in the FIA World Endurance Championship this year are likely to play a key role.
Schumacher hoping to continue in F1
Speaking about his future, the German said: “I mean it was definitely more last year when I was on the sidelines.
“Before, I didn’t really appreciate that I was one of the 20 [drivers on the grid]. I would always say, that it’s obviously great but it was always meant to be and now I’m in a position where I’m fighting to go back to that.
“So, I definitely look at that and think the dream isn’t over and I still have every opportunity to prove that I am worthy of Formula 1.”
Schumacher admitted that he was set to have further talks with Toto Wolff about potentially replacing Lewis Hamilton.
Given his previous performances in Formula 1, it would be a dream come true for Schumacher to be handed a seat at Mercedes given his difficulties with Haas.
He’s been linked with other teams in the past such as V-CARB, while Luca di Montezemelo has previously suggested that he’s disappointed it never worked out with Ferrari.
His name still carries significant weight within the sport, but he needs more than that to earn himself another drive at the very highest level.
