It’s been far from an ideal season for Mercedes this year and Toto Wolff’s future at the team has been questioned.
Speaking on the Unlapped Podcast, journalist Laurence Edmondson has shared what he’s heard about the 51-year-old’s situation within the team.
Mercedes have been front runners in Formula 1 for such a long time, but might finally go a season without a win for the first time since 2011.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid, but simply haven’t had the car underneath them to compete with Red Bull.
Max Verstappen has been unstoppable and is setting record and record this year.
The team went in the wrong direction with their development in 2023 and ultimately have been playing catch-up ever since.
Russell will need two very strong results to improve on his eighth place in the driver’s standings, while Hamilton looks set to finish below Sergio Perez as runner-up to Verstappen.
The future of team principal Toto Wolff at Mercedes has unsurprisingly been considered by some fans given the disappointing nature of 2023.

He’s also mentioned that he’s considered joining Jim Ratcliffe’s bid to purchase a stake in Manchester United.
Whether this means that his interest in F1 is waning is another matter.
Journalist provides update on Wolff’s future at Mercedes
Speaking about the Austrian team principal’s commitment to the team, Edmondson said: “There have been little signs of it getting better, but there’s been some fundamental things baked into this car, basically the chassis design, the layout of it with the suspension and things like that, which they cannot change.
“They haven’t been able to change and they’ve desperately been wanting to.
“The real test of it all comes next year, but you know I think I’m being fairly kind to them. There are a few journalists I’ve heard who have been pretty brutal about what they’ve done this year and the lack of results.
“And also a few people questioning Toto Wolff and whether he’s committed to Mercedes and wants to remain there long-term and set everything right.
“Everything I’ve heard is that he does, but the fact that those questions are being asked, that they haven’t scored results to the point that those questions can be asked, it’s really not where they should be.”
Wolff doesn’t come across as the sort of person who would give up on his future at Mercedes after one bad season.
Although Martin Brundle described the team as ‘painful to watch’ in Brazil, there have been positives too.
Lewis Hamilton’s consistency has been on show all season and in a car that has rarely been the second-quickest on the grid is set to finish best of the rest behind the Red Bulls.
Russell will want a more positive season in 2024 to avoid questions over his future although he recently signed an extension that will see him with the team until the year afterwards.
Mercedes have shown in the past that they’re more than capable of building a championship-winning car.
Now, it’s about closing the gap to Red Bull over the winter and putting that experience into action.
